Systems Engineer - Perception Safety

As a systems engineer for perception safety, your primary responsibility will be to define and ensure the safety performance of the perception system. You will be working in close collaboration with perception algorithm and sensor hardware development teams.

In this role, you will:

  • Perform structured hazard analysis to identify potential causes of safety hazards in the perception system, within the context of the full autonomy driving stack
  • Develop safety measures that could prevent and mitigate the potential safety hazards caused by perception systems, working in close collaboration with sensing, perception, prediction, and planning teams
  • Assess and evaluate perception system architectures and design to meet product requirements and achieve safety targets
  • Establish safety performance metrics, and develop tools for performance analysis, tracking, and validation of perception systems
  • Support and guide the development of verification and validation testing efforts
  • Automate processes for continuously improving results
  • Develop tools for processing large datasets
  • Qualifications

  • M.S. or higher degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical, Systems Engineering, or other relevant disciplines.
  • Hazard analysis experience including STPA, FMEA, FTA, etc.
  • 3+ years experience with perception system including Vision, Lidar, and Radar
  • Strong analytical skills and 2+ years experience with scripting or programming languages such as Python, Matlab, C++
  • 2+ years relevant work experience in robotics, aerospace, or automotive engineering
  • Experience in design or testing and validating high-performance complex systems
  • Collaborative team player with strong written and in-person communication skills
  • Bonus Qualifications

  • Experience with machine learning and deep learning
  • Experience in modeling, statistics, and probability theory
  • Experience with safety-critical hardware, software, and sensing components
  • Experience with large database management tools, such as Redshift in SQL
  • Familiarity with industry safety standards such as ISO 21448 and 26262
  • Additional Information

    Compensation

    There are three major components to compensation for this position: salary, Amazon Restricted Stock Units (RSUs), and Zoox Stock Appreciation Rights. The salary range for this position is $150,000 to $245,000. A sign-on bonus may be offered as part of the compensation package. Compensation will vary based on geographic location and level. Leveling, as well as positioning within a level, is determined by a range of factors, including, but not limited to, a candidate's relevant years of experience, domain knowledge, and interview performance. The salary range listed in this posting is representative of the range of levels Zoox is considering for this position.
