The Senior Director, Global Communications is a senior leadership role responsible for supporting all aspects of CORE’s integrated Communications strategy. This highly collaborative role will report into and work with the VP, Communications & Marketing for the dual purpose of 1) growing CORE’s reputation, reach and impact and 2) influencing audiences (individual and institutional donors, partners, media outlets, and staff) to support CORE’s mission. Working closely with other senior leaders, field teams and technical specialists, the Senior Director will help promote CORE’s brand, enhance our visibility, and raise awareness of our global programs among key stakeholders. This position will provide support to CORE’s cross-departmental goals and contribute to enhancing the credibility of the organization by developing impactful content for online and offline channels.

The Senior Director Global Communications will supervise a high performing Communications team including the Director, Global Communications, the Senior Communications Officer and the Communications Manager. The role will also oversee field communications leads and serve as a key HQ liaison. The Senior Director will be responsible for supporting CORE’s Development and Partnerships teams, contributing to building long-term donor relationships via a variety of marketing and communications channels and collateral. The ideal candidate will be an experienced leader and communicator, and knowledgeable about nonprofit communications and global humanitarian response. Success in this role will require strong writing, editing and storytelling skills to capture the best content and messaging to advance CORE’s strategic goals. The right candidate will be intellectually curious and will possess a clear understanding of the role of communications in fundraising, policy, systems, and mindset change. Critical thinking, leadership, diplomacy, creativity, strong decision making, and flexibility are key attributes for success in this role.

Responsibilities:

  • Mentor and oversee Director, Global Communications, Communications Manager & Senior Communications Officer.
  • Work with VP of Communications & Marketing to implement global communications strategies to promote, enhance, and protect CORE’s brand and advance our mission.
  • Support internal and external communications across the organization, identifying gaps, taking advantage of opportunities for growth, and executing on strategies.
  • Support Development and Partnerships departments with content and messaging strategy to engage individual and institutional donors and prospects at all stages of the donor lifecycle.
  • Define and lead the production of CORE’s communications collateral for multiple audiences, working closely with diverse teams, and in collaboration with external and internal experts to define, prioritize, and ensure the highest quality content.
  • Oversee field communications officers and leads; provide support and training; ensure brand integrity of all field communications; and provide strategic guidance.
  • In the event of a humanitarian emergency, serve as a Communications response lead, ensuring deployment team has Communications support and training and that urgent media and fundraising opportunities are maximized.
  • Content and Collateral:

  • Ideate, write, copyedit and project manage collateral including annual impact report, capacity statements, newsletters, emails, one sheets, presentation decks, social media, etc.
  • Ensure all collateral meets brand and messaging standards and includes latest impact stats.
  • Manage and direct video projects from start to finish, providing edits to ensure brand is properly represented.
  • Provide writing and copyediting support as needed including op-eds, speeches, blogs, messaging, talking points and narrative storytelling.
  • HQ Department Comms Support:

  • Serve as thought partner and liaison to HQ departments including Development, Partnerships, Programs, HR and IT.
  • Support in-person and virtual gala/events storytelling including content theme, video, photo slideshows, signage, invitation packages, scripting and other marketing materials.
  • Advise department leads on messaging strategies and oversee creating external-facing documents.
  • Field Communications & PR Support:

  • Partner with leaders across domestic and regional teams to identify local communications needs, subject matter experts, storytellers and media opportunities.
  • Oversee and orient field Communications staff on supporting organizational objectives; ensure they are contributing to content pipeline and field Comms stays on brand and on message.
  • Collaborate with VP of Comms & Marketing and PR agencies to develop media pitch ideas, source spokespeople, identify communications opportunities within emerging topics and breaking news.
  • Equip and empower staff in our field offices to effectively and strategically communicate with decision-makers at the country-level.
  • Ensure field communications staff are trained in brand messaging and visual brand and are adhering to CORE’s global guidelines.
  • Digital Media:

  • Create and update content for website, including crisis landing pages, financial and impact updates, narrative storytelling, and homepage updates.
  • Oversee social media content development to ensure relevant and timely topics are featured; provide copy edits on posts.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A minimum of 10+ years professional experience in communications or journalism; preference for experience in humanitarian response nonprofit organization.
  • MS preferred in journalism, communications, public relations, marketing, international relations, global studies, or related field.
  • 5+ years professional experience managing large teams with employees of all levels from coordinators to senior staff.
  • Exceptional, demonstrated writing and copyediting skills - samples required.
  • Excellent attention to detail and temperament for working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong, clear communications skills and ability to work across teams, cultures, countries, and time zones.
  • Impeccable organizational, planning and prioritization skills that enable execution of many urgent and sometimes competing tasks.
  • Passion for international development, global health, and/or humanitarian relief.
  • A “can-do” attitude, flexibility and ability to work through ambiguous and fluid situations.
  • Positive, solutions-oriented approach to work and passion for teamwork and productive collaboration; ability to build relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Fluency in English required, knowledge of other languages a plus.
  • Fluency in MS Office necessary.
  • Willingness to travel (domestic and international) occasionally and work after hours during emergency responses are required in the role.
  • NOTE:

  • This role is based out of Los Angeles, with a hybrid work modality. The Senior Director will be expected to visit the LA CORE HQ twice a week.
  • In accordance with CA law, the expected pay range for this CA position is posted with this position. The actual compensation will be determined based on experience and other factors permitted by law.
