Who we are:

Apella is applying computer vision, machine learning and NLP to improve the standard of care in the most critical aspect of healthcare; surgery. We build applications to enable surgeons, nurses, and hospital administrators to deliver the highest quality care. We are looking for an experienced machine learning engineer to join our team and work as a generalist across a number of optimization problems. We need brave people who are not afraid to jump in and work on unfamiliar systems and improve them. Our machine learning engineers work with product managers and the annotation team to help specify our optimization problems based on product needs of our customers.

The Role:

You are a machine learning generalist who enjoys dealing with the important parts of the problem, namely getting the right data into the right place to build effective models. You are a team player who can work closely with software engineers on product and infrastructure to take loose specifications and create delightful product experiences. As an early member of the team, you will have the opportunity to set the culture of our machine learning team.

What you bring:

Experience working on a variety of optimization problems, from recommender systems to classification or clustering

3+ experience working on machine learning systems dealing with the full production workflow and monitoring

Experience dealing with real world large-scale datasets

Ability to write readable, tested, efficient code with other engineers

A strong belief in craft and the quality of your work product

What is also nice:

Experience working in healthcare or another regulated industry

Familiarity developing SaaS products for a business customer

What you'll do:

You will work closely with engineering, product and data science teams to understand business problems and the potential for ML/AI solutions

Develop novel features and test them offline to improve performance

Build and integrate and monitor end to end lifecycles of large-scale, distributed machine learning systems

Stay up to date with the recent advancements in the field of machine learning and deep learning
