We're on the lookout for a great Engineering Team Lead with strong people leadership, delivery and operations experience as well as a technical software engineering background to join us at Xero!

This will be a Fixed Term role (Start date either November/Early December and ending October 2026).

About the team

You'll lead a pod of engineers who own a number of platform products at Xero. The team is responsible for creating, maintaining and maturing platforms that can scale and support Xero's continuing growth. Our customers are other Xero teams, supporting the overall product. We're based mainly in New Zealand, spread across Wellington and Auckland.

About the role

We're looking for an Engineering Team Lead to join our Engineering Leadership team and work closely with our product counterparts. You'll be managing a group of engineers whilst directly contributing to the successful outcomes of the team by supporting excellent engineering and delivery practices which enable rapid delivery of high-quality software.

You'll be responsible for supporting your direct reports in becoming awesome Xeros, empowering them to deliver high-quality software and fostering the growth of a world-class engineering culture within our teams. As an Engineering Team Lead at Xero, you'll also be responsible for delivery outcomes.

What you'll bring:

  • You’ll be a seasoned Team Lead, bringing substantial experience in guiding software delivery and engineering teams through Lean and/or Agile methodologies.
  • You'll have a technical/software engineering background
  • Your deep understanding of modern software delivery practices and the entire software development lifecycle is evident in your track record of successful team leadership.
  • You’ll have a proven track record as coach and mentor, adept at leveraging your extensive software delivery, technical experience, and expertise to provide impactful guidance. Enabling you to deliver the right knowledge at the right time and in the most effective way.
  • You'll possess high EQ and a true growth mindset; understanding that competency is not fixed but is enhanced through dedication and hard work. You'll be self aware, self regulated, motivated and empathetic, with great interpersonal skills.
  • You'll have a strong understanding of the importance of Xero's Engineering standards and practices and are able to coach teams to adhere to them.
  • What you'll do:

  • Engage, understand, collaborate, and communicate effectively with peers and teams across Xero to drive continuous improvement towards Xero’s sustainably excellent engineering vision.
  • Lead your team of engineers to successfully identify, scope, manage, and complete high quality work which delivers measurable improvements to production systems in a timely manner.
  • Build cross-team relationships for win-win outcomes
  • Foster team growth through feedback, coaching, and opportunities for advancement
  • Analyse system health and make regular system health reviews
  • Support engineers during incidents and facilitate post incident reviews
  • Maintain current knowledge of technologies used in the development of Xero’s software applications.
  • Build cross-team relationships and manage stakeholder expectations
