Applied AI Engineer & Researcher - Chicago, USA

Overview

Speechify is looking for an Applied AI Engineer & Researcher to advance AI and machine learning capabilities for speech and reading technology. This role blends research and production, collaborating with product and engineering teams to deploy state-of-the-art models into user-facing features.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and evaluate AI models for speech and text processing, including ASR (automatic speech recognition), TTS (text-to-speech), NLP, and related tasks.
• Prototype novel algorithms, run rigorous experiments, and analyze results to drive iterative improvements.
• Bridge research and production by turning research prototypes into scalable, maintainable components.
• Collaborate with data scientists, software engineers, and product teams to define requirements and deliver impactful features.
• Document models, maintain evaluation dashboards, and share findings with the broader team.
• Stay current with AI research relevant to reading apps and voice technologies.

Qualifications

• Advanced degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Statistics, or equivalent experience; strong research background is a plus.
• Strong Python programming skills and hands-on experience with ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch or TensorFlow).
• Experience with speech processing, NLP, audio feature extraction, signal processing, and model deployment.
• Ability to design experiments, analyze results, and ship production-ready models.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills; ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
• Publications or notable open-source contributions are a plus.
