RES is looking for a part-time Scientist I/Boat Captain to join our team.

We are seeking a qualified licensed Captain to operate and maintain vessels in support of coastal and inland field projects throughout the State of Florida. The successful candidate will ensure the safe transport, launch, and operation of vessels in compliance with all applicable regulatory and environmental standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operate and routinely maintain a variety of vessels in coastal and inland waterways, including navigation through/around narrow channels, in-water/overwater structures (bridges, piers, for example), and sensitive environments.
  • Safely trailer and transport vessels using non-CDL truck and trailer combinations to designated project sites.
  • Ensure adherence to all U.S. Coast Guard, state, and company safety and environmental regulations.
  • Coordinate vessel operations with field staff and provide logistical support for project implementation.
  • Support SCUBA-based field activities and ensure compliance with established safety protocols and AAUS standards.
  • Maintain accurate vessel logs, records, and required documentation.
  • Adapt to seasonal project schedules that may require a flexible workweek and extended travel within Florida.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience operating vessels in both coastal and inland waterways, including restricted/narrow passages and around in-water/overwater structures.
  • Valid boat captain license.
  • Proficiency in trailering, launching, and retrieving vessels with non-CDL truck and trailer combinations.
  • Minimum 1–3 Years Experience Operating Motorboats (20–25 ft)

 

  • SCUBA certification and current CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Experience in Coastal, Estuarine Waters and Adjacent Rivers - Familiarity with tides, currents, shallow drafts, and sandbars.

 

  • Proficiency in GPS, Navigation System and Chartplotter Use

 

  • Ability to travel throughout Florida; per diem provided for overnight travel.
  • Strong commitment to safety, regulatory compliance, and professional conduct.

Preferred Attributes

  • Valid U.S. Coast Guard Captain’s License (minimum OUPV or higher).
  • Prior experience supporting environmental, scientific, or restoration field operations.
  • Familiarity with vessel maintenance and repair procedures.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Strong coordination skills in team-based field settings.

Working ConditionsThis position requires frequent travel throughout Florida, outdoor work in varying conditions, and adaptability to dynamic and seasonal project schedules. Candidates must be prepared for physically demanding tasks and extended field assignments.
