Reddit, Inc. is seeking a Principal Engineer, Android Performance to lead performance improvements across our Android apps and platforms. This role requires deep expertise in Android performance optimization, profiling, memory management, and efficient UI rendering. You will work with cross-functional teams to identify bottlenecks, build instrumentation, and deliver scalable improvements across millions of users.
Responsibilities
- Lead end-to-end Android performance initiatives across Reddit's mobile apps.
- Profile, measure, and optimize CPU, memory, battery life, and network usage.
- Build and maintain performance instrumentation, benchmarks, and tooling.
- Identify bottlenecks, propose architectural improvements, and influence product decisions.
- Mentor engineers and set best practices for performance.
Qualifications
- 8+ years of software development experience with a strong Android background.
- Proficiency in Java and Kotlin; experience with C/C++ in native layers is a plus.
- Deep knowledge of Android performance profiling tools (Perfetto, Android Studio Profiler, Systrace, etc.).
- Strong understanding of memory management and garbage collection tuning.
- Experience with instrumentation, benchmarks, and performance budgets.
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills.
Nice to have
- Experience with cross-platform mobile architectures or large-scale apps.
- Familiarity with networking optimization and data usage considerations.
- Remote work experience and ability to work across time zones.
