We need a Director of Data Engineering to lead the people, process, and strategy for our foundational Data Engineering team. This Director will significantly elevate the maturity and operational excellence of the function, ensuring the reliable creation of data features and models that fuel our AI/ML initiatives. This is a full-time role and will work a hybrid schedule based in Lehi, Utah.
What is a day in the life of a Director of Data Engineering? Provide seasoned people management and mentorship to a distributed team of engineers across the US and India.Drive the operational maturity and efficiency of the Data Engineering function.Oversee the development, testing, and deployment of complex data pipelines that transform raw data into usable data models and features.Run the quarterly project process, ensuring tactical execution and that "no pipelines are left behind."Partner closely with Data Science and AI teams, ensuring the engineering output directly enables the building and training of models.Communicate strategy and progress through formal presentations to leadership and cross-functional stakeholders. What will I need to thrive in this role? 7+ years of dedicated experience as a people manager, with a proven track record of growing and enabling engineers.Prior experience in a Director-level role with demonstrated ability to set and drive organizational strategy.Experience managing or collaborating with global or offshore teams;Exceptional program management skills with the ability to define objectives, track progress, and deliver outcomes.A strong understanding of data engineering principles (e.g., data modeling, ETL/ELT pipelines) to effectively lead the function.Must be highly proficient and comfortable with stakeholder management and executive-level presentations.Familiarity with open-source data tools is a plus (SaaS environment experience is preferred). As the company continues to scale and the Data Engineering team expands (organically or through function consolidation), you will be positioned to take on greater scope and influence over the entire data platform and architecture, working directly with senior leadership to define the future of data at Pattern. What does success look like in the first 30, 60, 90 days? 30 Days (Ramp Up): You will fully map out the team structure, tools, and processes, understanding "where is what" and who the key internal stakeholders are.60 Days (Tactical Command): You will be immersed in the team's quarterly projects, providing tactical oversight and guidance to ensure successful execution.90 Days (Strategic Leadership): You will become the owner of the function's strategy, defining the roadmap, objectives, and key results for the Data Engineering team. What is the team like? You will manage a team of 6 Data Engineers across the US and India, reporting directly to the VP of Data and Architecture through regular performance meetings. This team is data driven and results oriented. You will collaborate regularly with members of your team to implement actionable solutions. Ideas and input are encouraged from all members.
