Primary Purpose: The Autonomous Vehicle (AV) Test Engineering team at Motional is responsible for validating the safety, functionality, and performance of our self-driving technology through rigorous, system-level testing. As a Test Engineer, you will play a hands-on role in the end-to-end verification of AV features—spanning perception, planning, and control—across virtual, closed-course, and public road environments. You will contribute to test strategy, scenario creation, and infrastructure development using industry-leading simulation tools, Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) platforms, and real-world vehicle testing. Collaborating with cross-functional teams, you will help translate engineering requirements into comprehensive test plans, automated test cases, and measurable outcomes. Your efforts will support iterative development, fault injection analysis, and safety-critical system evaluation, ensuring that every release meets the highest standards for quality and reliability.

Role responsibilities:Test Engineering

  • Contribute to a high-performing team focused on quality, continuous improvement, and robust validation.
  • Plan and execute test campaigns for self-driving features (perception, planning, control) in simulation and on-vehicle environments.
  • Develop and maintain test plans, cases, and automation scripts (Python, Bash/Shell).
  • Create synthetic and resimulation scenarios for development, root-cause analysis, and release validation.
  • Conduct mechatronic and systems integration testing, including on-road and test-track validation.
  • Analyze system logs and data to assess behavior, identify issues, and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  • Document test procedures and results using tools such as Confluence, Jira, and GitLab, ensuring compliance with ISO26262, ISO21448 (SOTIF), and ISO9001.
  • Continuously refine test strategies to align with evolving AV stacks and development cycles.
  • Support flexible schedules, including occasional night shifts or global collaboration.
  • Collaborate across disciplines to solve complex integration challenges and improve tools, processes, and safety solutions.
Vehicle Operations & Safety

  • Safely operate prototype AVs on public roads and test tracks as a safety operator with authority to intervene.
  • Manage in-vehicle data recording, perform basic debugging, and provide detailed feedback on vehicle behavior.
  • Conduct vehicle inspections, ensure maintenance compliance, and complete incident reports.
  • Handle emergencies per company procedures and engage professionally with the public.
  • Stay current on operational procedures and local traffic regulations.
What we're looking for:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering, Robotics, ECE, Computer Science, or related field.
  • 1+ years of relevant professional experience.
  • Strong understanding of software testing processes, SDLC, and QA tools.
  • Experience in test engineering, recursive testing, and mechatronic systems.
  • Proficient in Linux/Unix and familiar with C++, Python, Bash/Shell, and SQL.
  • Valid Singapore Class 3+ driving license with at least 3 years’ experience and zero demerit points.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with flexible hours.
  • Demonstrated logical thinking, adaptability, and bias-free problem evaluation.
  • Enthusiasm for autonomous vehicle technology, safety, and mobility.
Bonus:

  • Experience with Confluence, Jira, GitLab, or other issue-tracking tools.
  • Familiarity with robotics systems (sensors, actuators, mechanical/software integration).
  • Experience testing safety-critical or autonomous systems.
  • Background in technical writing or documentation for mechatronic systems.
  • Understanding of ISO26262, ISO21448 (SOTIF), and ISO9001 standards.
  • Experience designing and analyzing simulation-based test cases for AV software.
