Join #TeamGreen, where the mission comes first, collaboration drives us forward, and everyone pulls in the same direction to make a dent in the universe bigger than ourselves.

Role Purpose

Matillion is built around small development teams with responsibility for specific themes and initiatives. We are now looking for a Senior Staff DevOps Engineer

to work in our Release Engineering team. This role is based in Hyderabad in India.

How do you release updates and changes to Matillion's platform that makes the world's data useful without users ever noticing a glitch in service? Our Release Engineering team takes on this very challenge, advocating for the underlying design elements, developer platforms, product components, and infrastructure at Matillion. These are the essential building blocks for excellent, safe, and coherent experiences for our users and drive the pace of innovation for every developer. We look across Matillion to build central solutions, break down technical barriers and strengthen existing systems.

The Senior Staff DevOps Engineer for Release Engineering will sit alongside the Engineering Manager as the technical authority working with our Engineering and Product leaders to ensure our services and products seamlessly move from development all through into production. They will lead the technical direction for the team, and provide coaching and mentoring to other engineers. Outside the team they will share experience and best practices with other Senior Staff SRE and Software Engineers across Matillion. We are looking for people who can explain very technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders, carry out technical prioritisation and work well with colleagues in and outside of the team at all levels.

This is a technical role and will be hands on, but you will not be cutting code all day every day - you will have skills around architecture, design patterns, application hosting, build and deployment automation, development, testing and observability and use these to ensure our squads deliver software in a consistent and scalable way.

Another important aspect of this role is the procurement and management of datasource environments. These are used as test endpoints for the data connectors that Matillion builds. This role helps support the operational needs of the teams that utilize these endpoints – including management of accounts, roles, credentials, and test data.

What will you be doing?

  • Release Engineering
  • Lead designs of major software release components, systems, and features to improve the availability, scalability, latency, and efficiency of releasing Matillion’s services.
  • Lead sustainable incident response, blameless postmortems, and production improvements that result in direct business opportunities for Matillion.
  • Provide guidance to other team members on managing end-to-end availability and performance of critical services, on building automation to prevent problem recurrence, and on building automated responses for non-exceptional service conditions.
  • Mentor and train other team members on design techniques and coding standards, and to cultivate innovation and collaboration across multiple teams.
  • Manage individual projects priorities, deadlines, and deliverables.
  • Guide the development of tools that allow our product development teams to control and run their own release processes.Oversee the build process for our services, to ensure that they are hermetic.
  • Provide expert technical guidance on the governance and enforcement of policies and procedures around changes, releases etc.
  • Design and implement tools and processes that drive high velocity in our code deployments.
  • Provide technical expertise for the improvement of our tools for CI/CD, automated testing, configuration management and release management.
  • Oversee procurement, design and configuration of Datasource Environments for endpoint testing of Matillion’s DPC connectors.
  • Expertise with data management, including Databases, SQL, and no-SQL consoles.
  • What are we looking for?

  • 7+ years of experience with DevOps and/or SRE.
  • Experience with ArgoCD and other CI/CD tools; Kubernetes; and CloudFormation, Terraform or other Infrastructure-as-Code technologies.
  • Familiarity with software configuration management systems, source code version control systems (GitHub, etc.), and build management tools (Gradle, Maven, ant etc).
  • Passion for performance, release efficiency, observability, scalability and security.
  • A strong background in software engineering and release engineering, with coding experience in one or more of the following languages/libraries/platforms: Python, Go, JavaScript/Typescript, NodeJS, AWS, Docker, Serverless, React, Terraform.
  • Have previous experience of large scale web operations in a public cloud environment.
  • Be confident in your ability to own and deliver projects and issues to resolution using Agile methodologies and demonstrate a definite bias for action and focus on results.
  • Be an excellent communicator and cross-team collaborator.
  • Strive for personal excellence through continuous development and by keeping current with developments and offerings in the observability field.
  • Have a passion for solving problems and be proficient in measuring success, value and gaps.
  • Self Development and Growth

  • Develop new skills by working with other members of the team.
  • Work with the Team Lead or Manager to identify training goals.
  • Lead and partake in technical discussions within the team.
  • Actively identify and complete opportunities for self-training and external training.
  • Drive the team’s process of continual improvement
  • Personal Capabilities Required

  • Inquisitiveness - digging into problems and solutions to understand the underlying technology.
  • Autonomy - ability to work on a task and solve problems independently.
  • Motivation - sets personal challenges and constantly looking to stretch themselves.
  • Problem solving - recognition of problems and recasting difficult-to-solve problems in order to find unique and innovative solutions.
  • Integrity - honest and transparent in dealing, open to voice and accept criticism, is trustworthy and builds credibility through actions.
  • Detail focussed - pays attention to the details and can make a conscious effort to understand causes instead of just the effects.
  • Big picture aware - understands the scope and impact of a problem or solution.
