Our industry-first Robots-as-a-Service (RaaS) model ensures ongoing innovation, scalability, and cost-effectiveness without the burden of significant capital investments. With proven capabilities in diverse workflows—from picking and replenishment to sorting and pack-out—Locus Robotics empowers businesses to meet peak demands and adapt to ever-changing operational needs.

Locus Robotics is seeking a Principal Electrical Engineer to join our Advanced Products Group (APG)—a forward-looking team focused on exploring emerging technologies and evaluating product opportunities on a 2–4-year roadmap. This hybrid role offers remote flexibility but requires regular onsite presence in our Nashua, NH office for team collaboration and key development milestones.

In this role, you will design and develop electrical components, build and test prototypes, and work closely with cross-functional teams to bring next-generation robotics concepts to life. Your technical expertise and problem-solving skills will be vital in tackling complex engineering challenges and advancing the future of automation.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the electrical system design for new AMR products.

  • Design, develop, and test PCBs, harnessing, and electrical subsystems for reliability in industrial environments.

  • Collaborate across disciplines with other engineers to select and integrate key electrical components such as sensors, motor controllers, and communication interfaces ensuring seamless integration of electrical designs.

  • Develop and refine schematics, layouts, and documentation using industry-standard ECAD tools.

  • Support prototype development, troubleshooting, and system testing from concept through production.

  • Optimize power management and efficiency for battery-operated mobile robotics.

  • Ensure compliance with relevant safety and regulatory standards (e.g., UL, CE, ISO).

  • Provide technical mentorship to junior engineers and assist in reviewing design work.

  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Robotics, or a related field.

  • 7+ years designing electrical systems for robotics, automation, or electromechanical products.

  • Proficient in multi-layer PCB design using Altium Designer or comparable tools.

  • Extensive hands-on experience debugging analog and digital circuits using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and multimeters.

  • Skilled in implementing industrial communication protocols such as CAN (motor control), RS-485 (sensor networks), and SPI (component interfaces).

  • Proven track record developing battery-powered systems, including battery management systems (BMS) and low-voltage DC architectures.

  • Comfortable working alongside firmware engineers to tune motor controllers (e.g., PID) and support sensor integration.

  • Knowledgeable in EMI/EMC mitigation techniques and low-noise design best practices.

  • Applied DFM and DFT principles to support scalable prototype and production hardware development.

  • Strong project organization skills with experience managing multiple hardware efforts using structured documentation and version control tools.

  • Proficient English written and verbal communications skills required to collaborate effectively with internal and external teams.

  • Comfortable in a culture of quick, iterative design and experimentation.
