Job Description
The Development Group Manager I manages and mentors a team typically consisting of 8-15 Developers embedded within multiple Software Engineering teams. This role sits at the dynamic intersection of technology and leadership, demanding strong technical knowledge, exceptional people management skills, and strategic oversight. The Development Group Manager I’s primary purpose is to champion the growth and development of their team members, ensuring their individual and collective success while driving the overall quality of our products. This is a full-time position with remote, hybrid and on-site opportunities available.
Responsibilities Optimizing Engineering OperationsOwning and overseeing timelines, processes and implementation plans with significant input from the technical team, including milestone planning, meeting cadence, documentation updates, and ticket authorship and/or managementEffectively, overseeing and facilitating the efficiency of the team’s technical resourcesActively engaging with the team's efforts and workloads to proactively identify and escalate issues, resolving team questions, and synthesizing feedback for the Development Department ManagerProviding clear communication on strategy, ticket ownership, and facilitate cross-team or cross-departmental coordinationAttending planning meetings to manage team pace, ensuring urgency for success while preventing burnoutAdvising teams with insights and recommendations to improve efficiency and effectivenessEnsuring technical accountability and output of their teams by overseeing ticket work, completed implementation plans and other measures of technical successStrategic Planning and CoordinationAligning and coordinating with the Development Department Manager to proactively identify and take initiative on cross-team and cross-departmental needs, and company wide initiativesContributing to staffing decisions, including identifying gaps, defining roles, and managing team size in support of company goalsProduct InvolvementDeveloping and maintaining a proficient understanding of relevant product areas under your supervisionCollaborating with Software Engineering Management and Product Management teams to define strategic direction and planning the product roadmapReviewing and providing input on design documents as requestedEffectively conveying product direction and priorities to individual members and overall teamRelationships, Trust and Individual and Team PerformanceBuilding strong, trusting relationships with direct reports through regular 1:1s, prioritizing psychological safety, mutual respect, and trust at the individual and team level Fostering a culture of excellence and candid communication, ensuring employees feel encouraged to share ideas and opinions, and supported by both the company and the managerCultivating productive relationships with peers and superiors in order to achieve collective goalsProviding coaching, development, and career management to employees including conducting career planning, performance evaluations, compensation reviews, and promotionsSetting clear performance expectations, proactively identifying and managing underperformers, and facilitating terminations in coordination with Human Resources, and the Development Department manager when necessaryReducing the impact of interpersonal and technical conflicts within and outside the teams through efficient resolution and facilitationGuiding onboarding activities for new engineers to reduce startup time and ensure their success within the division Requirements Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, related field or comparable experience8 years of industry experienceManagerial experience or a proven track record in technical leadershipExcellent communication skillsExcellent analytical and troubleshooting skillsWritten communication skills – able to document issues effectively and conciselyStrong programming skills – using Java, Javascript/Typescript, or PythonFamiliarity with agile methodologies such as SCRUMFamiliarity with source control management systems such as GithubAbility to accurately and effectively document ideas and specificationsAbility to lead and guide teams of 4 or more employees Additional Information About Us

Compensation Pay
Based on the Sacramento region, the new hires minimum and maximum target salary for this role is $160k - $180k.
Inductive Automation’s ranges are market-driven and set to allow for flexibility. Although it is not typical for an individual to start at the top end of the range for the position, compensation decisions are dependent on: the facts and circumstances of each case, work location, job-related skills, experience, relevant education or training; and other business and organizational needs.
