This Manager role is dedicated to advancing our US Sales & Use Tax (SUT) Returns product and supporting our existing Returns tax team members. Fonoa Returns centralises US SUT data collection, jurisdictional mapping, validations, and draft return generation, minimising manual spreadsheet work and providing customers with a transparent, auditable, single source of truth. Customers gain time back, improve accuracy, and scale with growth across states and localities.

Returns integrates with the broader Fonoa platform (Tax engine, Digital Reporting, E-Invoicing), enabling end-to-end workflows from calculation to filing.

We’re seeking a versatile US indirect tax professional with deep multi-state SUT expertise and demonstrable tax technology experience. You’ll sit within the Tax team and partner closely with Product, Engineering, Design, and Commercial. We value managers who are comfortable experimenting with and implementing workflows (including AI-enabled tools) to accelerate day-to-day work and research, paired with proper verification, documentation, and respect for data security.

What you will do :

  • Support and elevate the Returns team on US scope: state/local research, form builds/updates, QA, documentation, and release notes.

  • Build and maintain coverage across states & localities: map data to US schemas, configure validations (rates, taxability flags, sourcing logic impacts), and keep forms current with legislative and administrative changes.

  • Own data quality & reconciliation patterns: define checks for jurisdiction assignment, caps/thresholds, rounding, discounts/credits, and marketplace facilitator adjustments; strengthen exception handling and audit trails.

  • Filing readiness & calendars: contribute to registration status handling, filing frequency logic, prepayments, consolidated vs. separate returns, and e-file/portal nuances (including payment and remittance formats).

  • Customer onboarding & support: guide data mapping and testing; run walkthroughs; gather feedback and translate it into prioritised product improvements.

  • Translate US SUT changes into product inputs: monitor state and local developments (e.g., marketplace rules, home-rule updates, boundary/rate changes) and turn them into clear, actionable specs for Product/Engineering.

  • Internal enablement: create playbooks, knowledge articles, and “happy-path” flows for Sales, Success, and Support tailored to the US landscape.

  • Use modern productivity tools (incl. AI where appropriate) to speed research, first-draft specs/change notes, test data creation, and summarisation of guidance, always with verification and documentation.

  • Lead scoped initiatives: own a country-equivalent “state pack” rollout, a reconciliation enhancement, or a filing-calendar improvement; and represent US SUT Returns in cross-functional forums.

You will be a great fit if:

  • You have proven hands-on US Sales & Use Tax experience across multiple states (calculations, compliance/filings, remittance), ideally with marketplace/digital services or e-commerce exposure.

  • Can translate US SUT requirements (state/local rules, sourcing, exemptions/resale, marketplace facilitator, caps/thresholds) into clear product specifications and validations.

  • Are comfortable with data-driven tax work (field mapping, CSV/JSON schemas) and reviewing outputs against returns and schedules.

  • Communicate clearly with both tax and non-tax audiences, turning complexity into simple, testable requirements and change notes.

  • Thrive in a fast-moving, collaborative environment; you’re self-directed, curious, and solution-oriented.

  • Are comfortable experimenting with and implementing workflows/tools (incl. AI-enabled) to accelerate work and support research, and you know how to verify outputs and protect sensitive data.

Though not essential, we would love it if you also had:

  • Experience with tax engines and/or homegrown tax technology; implementation experience for US SUT is a strong plus.

  • Familiarity with ERPs/APIs/data pipelines (SAP/Oracle/NetSuite, ETL/iPaaS concepts) and with issue tracking/versioning (Jira/Linear, Git basics).

  • Understanding of consolidated vs. separate returns, prepayments, credits, amended filings, and common e-file/portal patterns.

  • Knowledge of other US taxes (e.g., communications taxes) and/or other US indirect regimes is a plus.
