Company Overview
Focused Energy is a pioneering fusion energy start-up dedicated to generating clean electrical energy to responsibly meet the world’s growing demand. Founded by globally recognized laser and plasma physicists in partnership with experienced entrepreneurs, we are advancing commercial laser-induced inertial fusion technology as a clean, scalable, and economically viable energy solution.

Position Overview
We are searching for a highly motivated Mechanical Engineer to join our Mechanical Engineering Team in Darmstadt, Germany. This hands-on position blends advanced mechanical design using Autodesk Inventor with the practical assembly and integration of laser, vacuum, and diagnostic systems in both laboratory and cleanroom environments. You will collaborate closely with laser engineers, physicists, diagnostics experts, and controls/electrical teams to develop and assemble the next-generation LIDT test platform.

Key Responsibilities
Mechanical Design & CAD (Inventor)

  • Develop detailed 3D CAD models in Autodesk Inventor for laser system components, optomechanics, beamlines, diagnostic mounts, and vacuum hardware.

  • Prepare manufacturing drawings, layouts, assemblies, BOMs, and engineering documentation.

  • Create design concepts, prototypes, and visualization assets for reviews and presentations.

Hands-On Engineering & Assembly

  • Support assembly, installation, and alignment of laser components, optical mounts, vacuum systems, mechanical structures, and diagnostics.

  • Work in cleanroom settings during build and integration activities.

  • Participate in mechanical fit checks, iterative design–build cycles, and onsite troubleshooting.

System Integration (Laser, Vacuum, Diagnostics)

  • Contribute to the mechanical integration of:

    • Laser subsystems

    • Optomechanical assemblies

    • Large- and small-format optics

    • Vacuum chambers, feedthroughs, and pumping systems

    • Diagnostic and target delivery systems

  • Ensure designs meet standards for mechanical stability, thermal management, cleanliness, and vacuum compatibility.

Project Support

  • Assist with infrastructure installations related to the LIDT system.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams—including laser, controls, electrical, and facilities—to deliver integrated solutions within project timelines.

  • Support procurement activities and liaise with vendors for mechanical components and assemblies.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.

  • Strong proficiency in 3D CAD, with Autodesk Inventor preferred.

  • Several years of experience in mechanical design for complex systems.

  • Proven ability to deliver complete mechanical designs, drawings, and assemblies.

Preferred Knowledge / Experience

  • Experience in one or more of the following areas:

    • Vacuum system design (UHV/XHV chambers, flanges, pumping, feedthroughs)

    • Cleanroom procedures (ISO class environments, assembly protocols, contamination control)

    • Laser system or optomechanical integration (optics mounts, alignment tolerances, beam paths)

    • High-precision mechanical assemblies in laboratory, photonics, or semiconductor contexts

  • Design expertise in stability, vibration minimization, and thermal management

Personal Qualities

  • Hands-on, practical engineering approach with strong problem-solving abilities

  • Effective team player, adaptable to evolving requirements

  • High attention to detail and quality in engineering work

  • Excellent communication skills and self-motivation in a fast-paced environment

Work Requirements

  • Based in Darmstadt, Germany, with 80%+ on-site work due to the hands-on nature of the role

  • Willingness to work in laboratory and cleanroom environments

  • Occasional travel to vendors, partners, or other Focused Energy locations as required

Join Us
If you’re a mechanical engineer passionate about combining high-end Inventor design with hands-on assembly, and you want to contribute to cutting-edge laser systems for fusion-driven innovation, we encourage you to apply and help us advance the Focused Energy mission.
