Flex is a growth-stage, NYC headquartered FinTech company that is creating the best rent payment experience. It’s hard to believe that it’s 2025 and paying rent on time is expensive, inflexible, and difficult. We’re here to change that! Flex enables our users to pay rent throughout the month on a schedule that better fits their finances and budget. Our mission is to empower as many renters as possible with flexibility over their most significant recurring expense. After deliberately keeping a stealth profile as we built up unprecedented investor support and an enthusiastic user base, we are looking for motivated individuals to help us keep our mission growing. Will you be a part of the team?

About the Role

We are seeking a strategic and hands-on Director of Accounting Operations to lead core accounting operations in a dynamic fintech environment. This role will be responsible for managing the general ledger, while also overseeing Accounts Payable and Payroll functions. The ideal candidate will bring deep technical accounting expertise, a strong understanding of fintech / financial services, and a passion for process improvement and automation.

What you'll do

Core Accounting & Financial Reporting:

  • Drive the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness. This includes reviewing various balance sheet reconciliations and ensuring the accurate recording of expenses.

  • Prepare and analyze financial statements in accordance with GAAP and industry-specific standards.

  • Maintain and improve internal controls and accounting policies.

  • Support regulatory reporting and compliance

  • Partner with external auditors and tax advisors during audits and filings.

Accounts Payable Oversight:

  • Supervise AP operations, ensuring timely and accurate invoice processing and vendor payments.

  • Monitor AP aging and resolve discrepancies or disputes.

  • Ensure compliance with vendor contracts and payment terms.

  • Implement AP automation tools and best practices.

Payroll Oversight:

  • Collaborate with HR on accounting-related responsibilities associated with PEO transition (to in-house).

  • Oversee payroll processing and reporting, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.

  • Collaborate with HR and payroll providers to ensure data integrity and resolve issues.

  • Review payroll journal entries and reconciliations.

  • Ensure accurate accounting for payroll-related expenses and liabilities.

Leadership & Strategic Initiatives:

  • Manage and mentor accounting staff (Accounting Manager, AP Coordinator, Senior Accountant, and Payroll Coordinator), fostering a high-performance culture.

  • Collaborate with Senior Manager of Revenue Accounting to drive accounting process improvements, automation, and scalability in accounting operations.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Finance, HR, Legal, and Operations teams.

  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning initiatives.

Key Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA strongly preferred).

  • 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally in fintech, financial services, or a regulated industry.

  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, and internal controls.

  • Experience managing AP and payroll functions in a fast-paced environment.

  • Proficiency with accounting and ERP systems (e.g., Quickbooks, Netsuite ideally) and Excel.

  • Excellent analytical, communication, and leadership skills.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with financial services compliance and reporting frameworks.

  • Familiarity with payroll systems (e.g., Sequoia, BambooHR, Rippling).

  • Proven track record of implementing automation and process improvements.

  • Ability to thrive in a high-growth, tech-driven environment.

This role will be a hybrid opportunity, 3 days in the office in our NYC location.

The salary compensation range for this role will be commensurate with the candidate's experience and Flex's internal leveling guidelines and benchmarks. For working locations in NY/NJ, the base salary pay range will be $195,000-$210,000
