Director of Data Science

Role overview

Cobalt is seeking an experienced Director of Data Science to lead and scale our data science organization. You will define the data science strategy, build and mentor a high-performing team, and partner with product, engineering, and leadership to turn data into impactful business decisions.

Responsibilities

• Define the data science vision and road map aligned with company goals
• Recruit, mentor, and lead a diverse data science team
• Design and deploy scalable machine learning models and data products
• Collaborate with product and engineering to define metrics, data requirements, and instrumentation
• Build robust data infrastructure, data quality, governance, and experimentation platforms
• Communicate complex insights to non-technical stakeholders and influence strategy
• Lead experimentation and A/B testing programs
• Ensure best practices for ethics, privacy, and compliance
• Drive continuous improvement through research and innovation
• Manage relationships with executives and cross-functional partners
• Manage budgets, timelines, and resources

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience in data science, including leadership roles
• Advanced degree in a quantitative field (PhD or MS; BS with equivalent experience acceptable)
• Strong hands-on experience with Python and SQL; data modeling, feature engineering
• Proven track record deploying ML models in production and operating ML lifecycles
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure)
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills; ability to influence across orgs
• Experience building and leading high performing, diverse teams
• Strong business sense and ability to translate goals into data initiatives
• Familiarity with data privacy, governance, and compliance
