Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Creative Services Director, MedComms to oversee the daily operations of our Creative team. This role is responsible for leading a team of designers in delivering high-quality scientific communications content. The Creative Services Director is tasked with ensuring accurate, timely, high-quality creative content and client satisfaction. This is an opportunity to combine operational expertise, graphic design skills, and production knowledge to help clients communicate science and medicine in a clear, effective, and meaningful way. The Creative Service Director is a hands-on role that will blend creative direction and graphic/studio operations.

Key Responsibilities

Creative Art Direction:

  • Lead the creative development lifecycle from conception to delivery for the portfolio of key client projects.

  • Develop clear, innovative ideas and concepts that align with client's brand strategy and guidelines.

  • Create compelling creative materials by assigning design concepts to designers and guiding the development of those concepts into finalized layouts.

  • Partner with Account, Project and Scientific team partners to ensure creative alignment.

  • Participate in new business preparation including the development of RFP/pitch decks.

Graphic Design Management:

  • Oversee a team of 3 to 4 graphic designers in the design and production of high-quality scientific posters for medical congresses and symposia, ensuring alignment with client brand guidelines and scientific accuracy, including the redraw and refinement of scientific figures, diagrams, and charts to enhance clarity and visual appeal for publications, presentations, and digital platforms.

  • Work with graphic designers to create professional PowerPoint presentations, incorporating advanced layouts, infographics, animations, and templates that communicate complex data effectively.

  • Support the development of visual assets for a variety of formats, including print, digital, and interactive platforms.

  • Manage print production, including file preparation, proofing, vendor coordination, and final output for posters and other deliverables.

  • Ensure all designs comply with industry standards, brand guidelines, and medical/legal requirements.

Studio Operations Management:

  • Maintain and enforce file management systems, version control, and quality assurance processes.

  • Develop, document, and refine studio workflows, operational processes, and production guidelines to increase efficiency and consistency.

  • Monitor and allocate studio resources, balancing team workload across multiple clients and deliverables.

  • Troubleshoot production challenges and provide solutions to maintain quality standards and timelines.

  • Work with client services teams to strategically plan out scopes, budgets, and timelines for new projects.

  • Track and report on studio performance, productivity, and capacity utilization.

  • Build strong vendor relationships and manage cost estimates, timelines, and deliverables for outsourced production.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5-7 years of art/creative direction experience within a Medical Communications agency required.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Print/Production Management, Operations, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

  • Proven experience in managing and mentoring junior staff including graphic designers and freelance.

  • Knowledge of data visualization best practices for medical and scientific content including science visualization, animation, and medical illustration.

  • Expert level understanding of print production processes, file preparation, and output requirements.

  • Exceptional attention to detail, a keen eye for visual clarity, and the ability to translate complex scientific and medical information into compelling, accurate, and visually engaging deliverables.

  • Strong proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop), Microsoft Office including PowerPoint and project management tools.

  • Strong layout, typography, and visual storytelling skills.

  • Familiarity with motion graphics, video editing, 3D or interactive design a plus.

  • Exceptional organizational and time-management skills.

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate across creative, account, and client-facing teams including pitch presentation skills.

Preferred Skills

  • Familiarity with InCopy, Visio, and BioRender

  • Familiarity with digital production workflows and asset management systems.
