Overview

Catawiki, a leading online auction platform, is seeking an experienced Expert in Japanese Antiquities and Contemporary Art to join our specialist team in Japan. In this role you will assess authenticity, provenance, and condition, contribute to compelling catalog descriptions, and support the auction process with expert insights.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate and authenticate Japanese antiquities and contemporary artworks submitted for auction.
• Research provenance, market trends, and historical context to support accurate valuations.
• Draft detailed catalogue entries, condition reports, and expert notes.
• Collaborate with auction operations, risk, and curatorial teams to ensure high-quality listings.
• Engage with clients and experts to build consensus on authenticity and authenticity standards.
• Develop and maintain relationships with Japanese collectors, galleries, and connoisseurs.

Requirements

• Strong knowledge of Japanese antiquities and contemporary art, including major periods and movements.
• Experience in authentication, provenance research, and due diligence in a museum, gallery, auction house, or similar setting.
• Excellent written and spoken English; Japanese language skills are highly preferred.
• Analytical mindset with attention to detail and robust research skills.
• Ability to work independently within deadlines and collaborate with international teams.
