System Software Engineer - Java Runtimes, Tooling and Ecosystem

Canonical is looking for a System Software Engineer to contribute to the Java runtimes, tooling, and ecosystem that power Ubuntu for developers and customers. This role focuses on core toolchains such as GCC/LLVM and Rust.

Role overview

As part of Canonical's engineering teams, you will develop and maintain system software toolchains and contribute to the tooling ecosystem used by Ubuntu developers and users. You will collaborate with community and internal teams to ensure toolchain reliability, performance, and integration.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain core toolchains (GCC/LLVM, Rust) and related tooling
• Collaborate with the Ubuntu developer community and internal teams to integrate toolchains into the build and release pipelines
• Improve performance, reliability, and test coverage for toolchain components
• Debug, triage, and resolve issues reported by users and CI systems
• Document design and usage for toolchain components

Requirements

• Strong system software development experience, with focus on compilers/toolchains
• Proficiency in C/C++ and/or Rust; experience with GCC/LLVM toolchains
• Familiarity with Ubuntu, Linux, packaging, and build systems
• Experience with performance profiling, debugging, and tooling
• BSc/MSc in Computer Science or equivalent
