Overview
Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, is seeking a Software Engineer - packaging - to optimize Ubuntu Server for public clouds. This remote role is based in the Americas. You will work at the heart of Ubuntu, collaborating with experienced engineers to improve packaging for cloud deployments.
Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and maintain packaging for Ubuntu Server suitable for public cloud environments.
- Work with packaging tools and build systems (dpkg, debhelper, apt) to ensure high quality, reproducible builds.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams and cloud partners to optimize packaging pipelines for performance and reliability.
- Troubleshoot packaging issues across distributions, patch code, and prepare release notes.
- Develop automation (CI/CD, tests) to accelerate packaging workflows.
- Contribute to open-source packaging standards and best practices.
Requirements
- Strong experience with Ubuntu/Debian packaging, dpkg, debhelper, and packaging workflows.
- Scripting skills in Python and Bash or similar languages.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and automated testing.
- Good communication skills and ability to collaborate with remote teams.
Nice to have: open-source contributions or experience with Canonical packaging processes.
