Overview

The California Academy of Sciences is a premier science organization in San Francisco, dedicated to exploring and sharing knowledge about the natural world. We are seeking a strategic Director of Finance to lead all financial operations and planning.

Role Overview

As Director of Finance, you will oversee budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, accounting, internal controls, treasury, and donor/grant financial management. You will partner closely with senior leadership to drive financial strategy and ensure sustainable operations.

Responsibilities

• Lead the annual budgeting process and rolling forecasts; monitor performance against plan.
• Manage accounting, financial reporting, and internal controls in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit standards.
• Oversee cash flow management, treasury activities, and risk management.
• Coordinate annual audits and support board financial materials.
• Collaborate with development and program teams on grants, restricted funds, and donor reporting.
• Implement robust financial systems and analytics; manage a high-performing finance team.
• Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and internal policies.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field; CPA/CFA or equivalent preferred.
• 7-10+ years of nonprofit finance experience; proven leadership and team management.
• Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting; experience with grant accounting.
• Excellent analytical, communication, and strategic thinking skills.
• Proficiency with ERP and fundraising software; ability to translate financial data into insights for stakeholders.
