Block is seeking a Staff Android Engineer to develop and maintain the Android-based Kitchen Display System powering Square Kitchen products. This on-site role is based in the Bay Area, CA, United States of America.

Overview

As a Staff Android Engineer, you will design, implement, and evolve mobile software that enables a seamless kitchen workflow. You will collaborate with product, design, and backend teams to deliver robust, scalable Android applications and contribute to architecture decisions and engineering best practices.

Responsibilities

Design, implement, test, and maintain high-quality Android applications for the Kitchen Display System.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define feature requirements and deliverables.
Lead technical direction for mobile initiatives, set coding standards, and mentor engineers.
Ensure performance, reliability, and security of mobile apps; diagnose and fix production issues.

Requirements

5+ years of professional Android development experience.
Strong proficiency in Kotlin and Java.
Experience with Android SDK, Android Jetpack, and modern app architectures (MVVM, Clean Architecture).
Familiarity with RESTful APIs, Git, CI/CD, and testing frameworks.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

Nice to Have

Experience building kitchen or restaurant-focused applications.
Familiarity with Google Play Console and app deployment workflows.
