Employment Counsel at Block
Block is seeking an experienced Employment Counsel to join its Legal & Compliance team. This remote-friendly role provides strategic guidance on employment law for Block’s global operations, partnering with People Ops, Recruiting, and cross-functional teams to manage risk and ensure regulatory compliance.
Overview
This role is open to remote workers in North America with potential hybrid or on-site collaboration. You will advise on a wide range of employment matters, draft and review policies and agreements, and help scale Block’s people practices as the company grows.
Responsibilities
- Provide strategic advice on US federal/state and international employment laws affecting Block’s global workforce.
- Draft, review, and negotiate employment agreements, contractor arrangements, severance agreements, and HR policies; maintain and update employee handbook and related policies.
- Partner with People Ops, Recruiting, Finance, and outside counsel to design programs and manage HR compliance, investigations, and risk mitigation.
- Manage employee relations matters, wage & hour compliance, benefits, immigration, privacy, and retention of confidential information.
- Lead or support internal investigations; develop training and playbooks to scale compliant processes across the organization.
- Provide guidance on regulatory changes and influence cross-border employment strategies; participate in M&A integration as needed.
- Coordinate with outside counsel when necessary and manage budgeting for legal matters.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of employment law experience in-house or at a law firm; US bar admission; JD from an accredited law school.
- Strong knowledge of US federal and state employment laws with experience in global workforce matters; ability to translate complex legal concepts into practical business guidance.
- Excellent drafting, negotiation, and communication skills; proven ability to collaborate with HR, recruiting, finance, and executive teams.
- Experience managing external counsel and budgets; strong ethical standards and ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
- Preferred: familiarity with privacy, immigration, or benefits topics within tech or fintech sectors.
Compensation & Location
Estimated annual compensation ranges from USD 180,000 to 270,000 (Zone A). Local pay ranges may vary; this position is open to remote workers in North America. This role may include on-site collaboration as needed.
