VP - Senior Underwriter Affordable Housing (Remote)

Role Overview

Berkadia is seeking a Vice President - Senior Underwriter for Affordable Housing to lead underwriting for complex affordable housing transactions. In this remote/hybrid leadership role, you will review and approve large-scale financings, mentor underwriting staff, and collaborate with originations, asset management, and capital markets teams to structure, analyze, and close deals in compliance with HUD, LIHTC, and conventional financing programs.

Responsibilities

• Lead underwriting and risk analysis for affordable housing transactions, including LIHTC, HUD, FHA, and Fannie Mae/DUs deals.
• Develop comprehensive credit memos and cash flow models; present findings to senior leadership and investment committees.
• Collaborate with deal teams, originations, asset management, and capital markets to structure financing, identify risks, and close transactions.
• Mentor, supervise, and train junior underwriters; provide coaching and performance feedback.
• Ensure compliance with Berkadia policies and regulatory requirements; monitor market trends affecting affordable housing finance.
• Manage multiple deals concurrently; prioritize workload and meet deadlines.
• Interface with lenders, clients, auditors, and stakeholders to facilitate due diligence and closing.
• Lead efforts to improve underwriting processes and tools.

Requirements

• 10+ years of underwriting experience in affordable housing or multifamily real estate finance.
• Deep knowledge of LIHTC, HUD/FHA, and Fannie Mae debt financing; strong cash flow modeling skills using Excel and Argus Enterprise.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and ARGUS; experience with tax credit equity and syndication is a plus.
• Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to present complex analyses clearly to executive leadership.
• Bachelor's degree in Finance, Real Estate, Economics, or a related field; MBA or advanced degree preferred.
• Strong leadership and mentoring skills; ability to manage multiple deals and teams.
• Remote/hybrid work readiness; ability to travel as needed.
