Overview
Archer is seeking a Staff Design Engineer, Gearbox to lead the design and development of precision gearboxes for our propulsion systems. This role owns mechanical design from concept through production, collaborating across cross-functional teams to deliver reliable, high-performance gearboxes for next-generation mobility solutions.
Responsibilities
- Lead gearbox concept development and architecture for powertrain integration.
- Create and validate gearbox models and tolerances using GD&T.
- Select gears, bearings, shafts, seals, lubrication, and thermal management solutions.
- Develop CAD models (SolidWorks/Creo) and generate detailed drawings and specifications.
- Perform FEA/CFD analyses (stress, modal, vibration) and evaluate load cases to ensure robustness.
- Collaborate with manufacturing and suppliers to ensure design for manufacturability and testability.
- Plan and execute bench and system tests; analyze test data and iterate designs accordingly.
- Own design documentation, risk assessments, and compliance with relevant standards.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent) with 8+ years of gear design experience; or MS with 6+ years.
- Deep experience in gear design, tooth geometry, and gear manufacturing processes (hobbing, shaving, finishing).
- Proficiency in CAD tools (SolidWorks/Creo) and FEA tools (ANSYS/Abaqus).
- Strong knowledge of GD&T, ISO/AGMA standards, and reliability-oriented design practices.
- Excellent problem-solving, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
Nice-to-Have
- Experience with electric propulsion, powertrain integration, lubrication, and thermal management.
- Familiarity with design for reliability and testing methodologies.
