Biological Safety Research Scientist

📋 Description

• Design and execute capability evaluations to assess model capabilities
• Collaborate with threat modeling experts and ML engineers to train safety systems
• Analyze safety system performance and identify gaps
• Develop rigorous stress-testing of safeguards against evolving threats
• Partner with Research, Product, and Policy teams to embed biological safety across the lifecycle
• Contribute to external communications, including model cards and policy documents

🎯 Requirements

• PhD in molecular biology, virology, microbiology, biochemistry, systems or computational biology, or related life sciences field, or equivalent experience
• Extensive experience in scientific computing and data analysis, with proficiency in Python
• Deep expertise in modern biology, including reading and writing techniques (high-throughput measurement, gene synthesis, genome editing, protein engineering)
• Familiarity with dual-use research concerns, select agent regulations, and biosecurity frameworks (e.g., Biological Weapons Convention, Australia Group guidelines)
• Strong analytical and writing skills; ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
• Background in AI/ML systems, particularly experience with large language models; experience applying ML to biology

🎁 Benefits

• Annual salary range: $245,000 – $285,000 USD
