Ampersand is a biotechnology company applying machine learning to protein design to accelerate discovery. We’re seeking a Principal Scientist, Machine Learning (Protein Design) to lead strategic ML initiatives and translate them into experimental success.

Role overview

You will lead the design and application of state‑of‑the‑art machine learning methods to protein design problems, mentor a team of scientists, collaborate with experimental teams, and help build scalable ML systems.

Key responsibilities

• Define ML strategy for protein design projects and roadmap development
• Develop and deploy ML models (e.g., deep learning models, representation learning) to predict protein properties
• Collaborate with wet-lab and computational teams to validate designs
• Mentor junior scientists and foster a collaborative research environment
• Publish results and contribute to IP generation
• Build and maintain scalable data pipelines and tooling

Qualifications

• PhD in Computer Science, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, or related field
• Strong track record in machine learning applied to biology or protein design
• Experience with Python and ML frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch)
• Proven ability to lead research efforts and manage projects
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills
