ActBlue is seeking an External Communications Director to lead external communications strategy for a national nonprofit fundraising platform. This full-time, remote role will oversee media relations, brand messaging, executive communications, and crisis communications. You will build and oversee a proactive communications program, manage relationships with journalists and stakeholders, craft compelling statements, brief executives, and oversee campaigns that elevate ActBlue's public profile. The ideal candidate has extensive experience in corporate or nonprofit communications, a proven track record in media relations, and the ability to translate complex policy and fundraising issues into clear, persuasive messages.

Responsibilities

• Develop and execute ActBlue's external communications strategy to advance organizational goals
• Lead media relations, pitch stories, and manage journalist relationships
• Oversee executive communications, including speaking notes, statements, and op-eds
• Shape and maintain ActBlue's brand messaging and voice across channels
• Coordinate with policy, campaigns, and product teams to ensure unified messaging
• Lead crisis communications planning and rapid response efforts
• Manage and mentor a communications team, if applicable

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience in corporate or nonprofit communications
• Proven success in media relations and securing national coverage
• Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills
• Ability to translate complex policy and fundraising issues into clear messages
• Experience leading cross-functional teams and managing stakeholder relationships
• Comfort with remote work and collaborating across time zones
