Role Overview
2K is seeking a Senior VFX Artist to join our San Mateo studio. The Senior VFX Artist will lead the creation of high-quality real-time visual effects for our games, collaborating with art, design, and engineering teams to deliver compelling visuals that support gameplay. This is a hands-on role requiring artistic vision, technical skill, and strong communication.
Responsibilities
- Create and implement high-quality real-time VFX for game projects using industry-standard tools and pipelines.
- Collaborate with art directors, engineers, and designers to define visual goals and ensure effects align with gameplay and art direction.
- Build, iterate, and optimize particle systems, shaders, and simulations for Unreal Engine and/or Unity.
- Develop efficient, reusable VFX pipelines, documentation, and best practices for the team.
- Optimize performance to meet frame-rate targets across multiple platforms.
- Contribute to art direction, style, and consistency across titles; mentor junior artists.
- Review asset pipelines and ensure compatibility with production workflows.
Requirements
- 5+ years of professional game VFX experience with a strong portfolio demonstrating real-time VFX work.
- Proficiency with industry tools such as Houdini, Maya, and real-time shader work.
- Hands-on experience with Unreal Engine and/or Unity; strong understanding of real-time rendering, PBR, and optimization.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills; ability to work across disciplines and deliver on tight timelines.
- Knowledge of scripting or shading languages (e.g., Python, MEL, HLSL/GLSL) is a plus.
Nice to Have
- Experience with GPU particle simulations, Niagara, VFX graphs, or similar modern VFX toolchains.
- Familiarity with Houdini Engine or other procedural content creation workflows.
- Understanding of asset pipelines and version control (Perforce, Git).
